Wisdom Teeth: Removal, Maintenance and Cavity Prevention

4 Signs You May Need a Root Canal

A root canal is performed to help to protect your teeth, treat pain and prevent the need for an extraction. A root canal is normally needed because the pulp inside of a tooth has suffered some kind of trauma which has resulted in its death. Once pulp death has occurred, a dental abscess can form which in turn leads to intense pain and infection. If you do not receive prompt treatment, this infection could spread, causing further medical complications. This is why it is important that you are able to recognise the signs that you may require root canal treatment. Below is a brief guide to 4 signs you may need a root canal.

Persistent toothache

If you have a toothache that just won't go away, this could be a sign that the dental pulp within the aching tooth is dying or has died. The pain may be more pronounced when you are eating food which requires a lot of chewing such as nuts and meat. If you experience a sudden burst of intense pain, this could be a sign that a dental abscess has formed inside of the affected tooth. If you experience a persistent toothache, you should book an appointment with your dentist.

Increased Sensitivity

As the dental pulp within your tooth begins to deteriorate, you may first experience increased sensitivity when you consume cold food or drink. This can often be relieved by warming the tooth. However, as the pulp deteriorates further, you may also begin to experience increased tooth sensitivity when you consume hot food or drink. This pattern is a classic sign that you need root canal treatment, so call your dentist today.

Swollen Gums

A dental abscess can form between the affected tooth and the surrounding gum tissue, resulting in swollen gums. You may also notice an eruption of what look like very small pimples around the affected tooth. This will be accompanied by pain and bad breath. If you notice any of these signs, it is important that you contact your dentist.

Discolored Teeth

As the pulp inside a tooth deteriorates and begins to die, it can fade in colour. This can lead to the tooth looking discoloured and paler than usual. If you notice that one of your teeth becomes painful and begins to change colour, this is a sign the tooth may require a root canal.
